Now she is equipping a new generation with data analytics and AI skills, proving that Africa’s digital future can be built, coded and led by Africans.

Wangari Maathai

The Woman Who Made Tree Planting a Movement

Wangari Maathai turned a simple act into a movement for dignity, democracy and peace. In 1977 she founded the Green Belt Movement, which empowered women across Kenya to plant trees, restore their land and earn an income. She became the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a PhD, and in 2004 she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Her legacy still reminds the world that lasting change often begins with ordinary people taking care of the places they call home.
